ABOUT US
The Science & Technology Communication (STC) division of the Department of Media Sciences of Anna University Chennai offers an M.Sc. programme in Science and Technology Communication. Also, it has Ph.D. scholars working in the area of Science and Technology Communication. The Ph.D. topics include: Coverage of Water Crisis in Media; Role of Radio in Communicating Science; Information and Communication Technologies in Managing Coastal Disasters; and Media’s Role in Disaster Mitigation. The faculty members have attended refresher courses and training programmes in remote sensing, climate change, environment and disaster management. They have also presented and published a number of papers in these areas. Books they published include:       
1. Media, Technology and Society;       
2. Television in Education;       
3. Understanding Development Communication; and       
4. Communication Initiatives in Tsunami-Affected Areas.

Some of the funded projects undertaken are: Evaluation of the Telemedicine Initiatives of ISRO; Satellite Communication Needs of Coastal Areas; and Process Documentation for Sanitation Campaigns.

MSc (Science and Technology Communication) has separate papers on Environment, Disaster Management, Climate Change and Health, with respect to communication, and the STC division also collaborates with other university centres. Besides, it offers a special paper on Science Communication for MSc (Electronic Media).

The Science and Technology Communication division of the Department of Media Sciences is supported by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC) of the Department of Science and Technology (DST). It has two-year NCSTC funding for about Rs. 40 lakhs. Now it has three faculty members (with sanction for the posts of one professor and two lecturers), a project assistant and a clerical assistant. All the three faculty members co-opted now in the programme have specializations in science and technology communication.
